Method for treating infant respiratory distress syndrome (IRDS) and adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) comprises bronchoalveolar lavage with a dilute lung surfactant solution followed by administration of a lung surfactant. An Independent claim is also included for a kit for treating IRDS or ARDS, comprising: (a) a 50-500ml container, containing a powdered lung surfactant composition with a phospholipid content of 50-500mg; and (b) a 50-500ml container, that contains a powdered lung surfactant composition with a phospholipid content of 1-10g.
