A process extracts an oxygen-poor phase from liquid carbon dioxide which has been produced from a fermentation process. Incoming liquid carbon dioxide with the dissolved oxygen is released onto the surface of liquid carbon dioxide within a tank. The incoming liquid carbon dioxide is released in such a way as to minimize the turbulence in the incoming liquid. Non-turbulent carbon dioxide sinks to the bottom, leaving the impurities at or near the surface. Almost pure carbon dioxide is drained from the base of the tank. The liquid carbon dioxide is released into the tank via a baffle arrangement of steel wool.
