Polymer dispersions or water-redispersible polymer powders for modifying plaster- or calcium carbonate-based materials are obtained by emulsion copolymerization of vinylaromatic(s) and 1,3-diene(s) in presence of protective colloid(s) and in the absence of emulsifiers, optionally followed by drying the dispersion.
