Spraying is carried out in two stages. A broad application nozzle (7) covers large areas reaching nearly to the edges, without overspray. At the edges, spraying is completed by an edge application nozzle (8) covering small areas. Preferred Features: The spraying process first employs a wide fan (or fishtail) nozzle for area application. Nozzle width is 70-80 mm; pressure = 40 bar. Edge finishing follows area application. The liquid is especially an aqueous polymer dispersion. Resultant layer thicknesses are 50-200 micro m. Spraying is carried out by robots (3), the nozzles (7, 8) fixed to a robotic head (6) with controlled movements. Robots are preferably arranged on either side of the vehicle body production track (2). The film is applied to the roof, all front and rear upper surfaces of the body, and horizontal edges of the window side rail. The coating is applied immediately before final fitting takes place.
