A rainwater storage system (1) consists of a series of preferably sub-surface cisterns (4-7) fed simultaneously from a single distribution point and linked and operated especially in parallel. Also claimed is an operating process in which some of the cisterns are operated as storage basins, while others are operated as reserve basins for the intermediate storage of large quantities of rainwater during periods of heavy or extended rainfall.
