The device has a row arrangement (14) of parallel sensor units, which extends over the whole retractable height of the mast, and is connected to the evaluation unit by a single cable (16) with a small conductor core. An actuator co-operates with the sensor units to generate a signal for the position of the mast along its entire length. The row arrangement and the actuator can be moved with respect to one another.
