A procedure is described for monitoring an auto gearbox by the electronic control apparatus of the gearbox which controls the clutches and brakes of the gearbox as a function of monitoring signals passed to it via a hydraulic control apparatus. The electronic control apparatus monitors the actual gear with the help of the variation of the gearbox input speed and output speed outside the shifting processes according to a certain function. A fault occurring over a given time is interpreted as a symptom as a result of which there is shifting from the actual gear into a replacement gear. For each gear, a clutch-related symptom counter is used which is the sum of the clutch-related symptom counters for each gear according to a certain relationship.
