The controller for a rail vehicle using diesel propulsion (10) and a mechanical gearbox (20) varies the engine's fuel injection (11) manually by a lever (9). The gearbox has two speeds and a neutral position with automatic gear-shifting, and a gear position indicator (25). A synchronising indicator (SI) generates a signal (G) after synchronising. Alternatively, the fuel injection may be varied using the output of a speed regulator (DR). Its set point (F) is input from a signal shaper (SB) which evaluates the necessary synchronising speed from the output shaft speed (n2). An electronic unit (US) undertakes the gear-shifting depending on the output shaft speed in stages (similar to double-declutching in cars without synchro gearboxes). ADVANTAGE - Inexpensive automatic gearbox without use of fluid coupling or torque converter.
