Metal application onto a ceramic substrate involves thermal spraying after physical vapor deposition (PVD) of a metallic adhesion promoter. An Independent claim is also included for a metal coating produced on a ceramic, especially silicon nitride, substrate by the above process. Preferred Features: The metallic adhesion promoter comprises a 1-10 mu m thick chromium or chromium-containing layer and the sprayed coating comprises a FeCrAlY or NiCrMoFeTi layer.
