A method for improving the burn inside a cylinder in an IC engine has a porous insert (26) inside which the fuel/air mixture burns. The porous structure ensures an even burn over the combustion space and prevents the conventional burn front which leaves unburnt fuel at the edges of the cylinder. The porous material can be a ceramic, a metal or any heat resistant structure. A gas expansion duct (30) is cut into the structure which is attached either to the crown of the piston or to the inside of the cylinder head. A recess in the piston crown, or in the cylinder head provides a mounting point for the structure.
