In order to keep the blocking times of multiple-track level crossings for road traffic as short as possible, the aim is to control the trains so that they cross a level crossing as simultaneously as possible. So far, this task has only been inadequately solved due to unavoidable schedule deviations or the inaccuracy of the vehicle control; Switching off level crossings at the same time increases the blocking times. The invention provides for, by targeted action on individual trains (Z2) to reduce their speed so that the level crossings are switched on as simultaneously as possible, or that a train that reaches a level crossing at the earliest when it is already being used by another train is reduced in speed so that the level crossing can be opened at least briefly before the train under consideration switches the level crossing on again. The control instructions for reducing the driving speeds are transmitted to the trains by the level crossing, which determines this information from the position and speed information transmitted to it by the trains.
