Scrap preheating equipment, comprises a charging chamber (4) positioned above a preheating chamber (3) and has inlet and outlet openings (23, 22) operated as locks. Equipment for preheating scrap, using heat recovered from melting furnace off-gases, comprises a chamber (3) having an upper cold scrap receiving section (8), a hot off-gas inlet opening (15) and a lower section (9) with a discharge system (6) for heated scrap delivery to the melting furnace (2) and with an off-gas outlet opening (16). A gas permeable grating system (11a, b) is provided between the chamber sections (8, 9, 10) and can be moved between closed and open positions, the closed position being maintained for a certain dwell time. A charging chamber (4) is positioned on the upper chamber section (8) and has a first closable opening (23) to the upper chamber section and a further closable opening (22) for cold scrap introduction by a charging device (5). A system is provided for controlled gas, pressure and/or temperature alteration in the charging chamber and the charging chamber openings are operated as locks.
