The casing (12) of the converter (10) has a turbine wheel (22) with a piston (96) for selective conversion. Friction surfaces (80,82,88) and an annulus (84) and tongues (86) facilitate passage of fluid through the bridging coupling (40). This permits selective torque transmission between the casing (12) and the wheel (22). The impeller (18) with shell (16) and blades (20,28) supplements supports (44,50,52,70), a spring (56), gears (62) and a control hole (106).
