Selective surface hardening process comprises cooling a steel workpiece section during surface hardening of another section. A surface hardening process, for steel workpieces having two or more rotationally symmetrical sections which are to be subjected to different hardening treatments, comprises enclosing one of the sections by adjustable heaters in a hardening machine and cooling a second section during the surface hardening operation. Preferred Features: Cooling is effected by a chill body or a cooling fluid (12) e.g. oil or water.
