The stationary phase comprises electrically-conducting material. Its electrochemical potential is controlled by an external voltage source. An Independent claim is included for the method of chromatographic separation of particles using the column. These are charged and polar, or are susceptible to polarization. Positive or negative charge is applied to the bed surface. A mobile phase flows through, from which particles are adsorbed or retarded on the surface of the fixed phase. Particles leave the chromatographic column with the mobile phase, when a retention time characteristic of the particles has elapsed. Particles are alternatively eluted following a variation in potential.
