The invention relates to a method and to a device for determining the TOC content of aqueous samples. According to the inventive method, inorganic carbon compounds in the samples are removed by acidification and the organic compounds are irradiated with UV light and oxidized to carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide containing sample is run through a electrodialysis unit in which HCO3- ions and H+ ions are produced which pass through corresponding exchanger membranes and enter a pure-water-rinsed measuring chamber. The conductivity of the pure water before entering the measuring chamber and after leaving the measuring chamber is measured and the TOC content is determined on the basis of the respective conductivity values.
