The damper(1) setting is continuously increased or decreased in accordance with the momentary force measured on the spring so that the force of the spring is compensated by the damper force. A hydraulic oscillation damper working on the uniflow principle is combined with an externally controlled continuously variable restrictor unit. The restricting element in the main acts upon the balance of the damper and influences both the damper's tension and compression stages.
