An oil quality sensor has a layer with a coating of polyimide or polyamide which is sensitive to different oils and engages in a polycondensation reaction with carbonic acid anhydride and a mono- or multifunctional amine. An Independent claim is also included for a method of manufacture in which the monomer components are mixed with the oil sample and heated to initiate the reaction.
