The invention relates to a method for adjusting an emission mixture of an internal combustion engine during cold starts. According to the invention a hydrocarbon adsorber (3) and a catalytic converter (2) are positioned in the exhaust-gas line downstream of the internal combustion engine. To prevent a reduction in the effectiveness of the catalytic converter (2) during the cold-start phase the emission mixture is adjusted to a definable setpoint downstream of the hydrocarbon adsorber (3). The invention also provides for a device (1) for carrying out said method, notably a lambda probe (4) which is mounted between the hydrocarbon adsorber (3) and the catalytic converter (2).
