N-phosphonomethyl-iminodiacetic acid (I) is prepared by reacting iminodiacetic acid (II) with phosphorous acid and formaldehyde in an aqueous medium in the presence of a strong mineral acid is carried out at 110-150 deg C under a protective gas atmosphere.
