The cooling system has a primary cooling circuit (2) for cooling the engine (5) and at least one secondary cooling circuit (3) for cooling a fluid or a system in the vehicle with a common balancing container (9) for compensating coolant volume fluctuations and especially for venting the coolant circuits. The primary coolant circuit has a primary connection (23) to the balancing container and opens into the container at a first coolant level (24). The secondary circuit has a separate secondary connection (25) to the container that opens into it at a higher second level (26).
