The woodworking machine has a milling tool (2) which is controlled for following surface irregularities of the machined workpiece (1), via an optical sensor (8) for scanning the latter and a setting drive (7) adjusting the position of the milling tool in a direction perpendicular to the surface of the workpiece. The operation of the setting drive is delayed in dependence on the relative spacing of the optical sensor from the milling tool in the workpiece feed direction.
