The motor vehicle has a transverse engine with an upper section inclined to the back. A cross strut (2) with deformable cross section is located within the movement path of this upper section (7) during a rear crash impact. The strut has formed parts (8,9) to catch the engine section during an impact-generated movement. It is a hollow beam of energy-absorbent material and contains an open profiled part (3). The edges of the profiled part are fastened to a bottom panel (1) of the vehicle.
