The especially rear stiffening structure for motor vehicles consists of a rear cross member and longitudinal support system, the cross member (1) of which has a closed profile cross section in such a way that an upper profile section (9) forming at least one step (8) extends upwards over the plane of the rear floor pan (5a), and the rear floor pan is supported on the thereby formed step. The upper profile section extends upwards by such a distance that in interaction with the lower profile section (11) it corresponds to a stiffening structure with at least two cross members separated from one another and located one above the other.
