Cylinder housing, especially IC engine crankcase, is produced by electron beam welding a thick dry liner sleeve in a housing bore before finish machining of the sleeve to the final thickness
Cylinder housing production, by electron beam welding a thick dry liner sleeve (20) in a housing bore (12a) and then finish machining the sleeve (20) to the final thickness, is new. Production of a reciprocating piston engine cylinder housing, having separately manufactured light metal alloy housing and liner components which are electron beam welded together, comprises (a) drilling the cylinder housing (12) for receiving a dry liner sleeve (20); (b) turning the sleeve to a wall thickness of -2 times the final wall thickness; (c) inserting the sleeve (20) in the drilled bore (12a); (d) electron beam welding the sleeve at least at the connection face (22) for the cylinder head; (e) flat machining the connection face (22); and (f) finish machining the running face of the liner sleeve (20). An Independent claim is also included for a cylinder housing produced by the above process and comprising a housing of Al-12% Si alloy and a liner sleeve of a hypereutectic Al-21% Si alloy.
