A substrate has a surface comprising a condensate of at least one hydrolyzable compound of a main group III-V element and/or secondary group (II)-(IV) element and has a microstructure such that the contact angle with water or hexadecane is at least 5 deg greater than that of the corresponding smooth surface. A substrate (I) has a microstructured surface comprising: (A) a composition consisting of a condensate of at least one hydrolyzable compound of an element (M) of a main group III-V element and/or secondary group (II)-(IV), whereby at least a portion the compound contains a hydrolyzable group (A2) and a non-hydrolyzable carbon containing group (A2) and the molar ratio of (A) to (A2) in the corresponding monomeric starting compounds is 10:1-1:2. 0.1-100 mol. % of (A2) are (A2') that have on average 5-30 fluorine atoms that are bonded to one or more aliphatic carbon atoms that are separated by at least two (M) atoms; and (B) a microstructure of a type such that the contact angle with water or hexadecane is at least 5 deg greater than that of the corresponding smooth surface. An Independent claim is included for a process for the preparation of (I) by either: (i) embossing the surface of a deposited coating with a die, before or during drying and/or curing, that has a non-polar and/or low energy surface or (ii) incorporating nanoscale inorganic solid particles or agglomerates having a particle size of at least 50 nm.
