A procedure for operating an electric fence apparatus has the steps: - generation of a pulse period relative to the voltage at an output side of the apparatus with a pulse interval and an intermediate pulse interval following this, the pulse interval being selected so that only a fraction of an energy storage condenser of the apparatus is discharged during the pulse interval. Detection of an electrical load state at the output side of the apparatus; - adjustment of the pulse interval on the basis of the detected load. The step of detecting the load state and the step of adjusting the pulse time interval take place in a closed control loop without dead time.
