The safety device uses a 4-stage starter switch (16) incorporating a jump starting point (15) and contact points for a battery terminal, an onboard network terminal and a terminal for electrical load components, e.g. the starter motor (12), the electrical generator (13) and an electric fan (12a), positioned in the part of the vehicle which is likely to be damaged in an accident. An overcurrent within one of the latter components is detected by a sensor (19a) for altering the configuration of the switch, for disconnecting the load components while maintaining the battery supply to the onboard network.
