The automatically operated lawn mower has a cutter (9) driven by a DC electric motor and is supported on wheels (1,2). The operation of the mower is controlled by a processor unit (13) and this accepts inputs from infrared and ultrasonic detectors (16,17) that respond to the height and density of the grass.
