During the opening phase, the gas exchange valves do not enter the combustion chamber area covered by the reciprocating piston, but are retracted into the cylinder head area. When open, the valves engage with a second sealing face, which is opposite to the normal sealing seat, on a corresponding part of the cylinder head for heat dissipation. An elastic member between valve and valve actuator can accommodate an excess stroke.
