The system has an electronic lock (3) and key (2), an arrangement for optically transferring energy from the lock to the key to operate the key and an arrangement for the optical transfer of a code between the lock and key. After positive identification of the code, at least one action is performed in and/or by the lock, such as triggering functions, switching on the ignition, starting the engine, etc. The code transfer arrangement can be operated at an optical frequency that is different in at least one transmission direction (4) between the key and lock from the energy transmission (12) frequency.
