Data converter for converting a digital code allocates ranks representing parts of first bit sequence, extracts parts of first bit sequence specified by ranks to produce second code

The data converter converts a first digital code represented by a first bit sequence into a second digital code represented by a second bit sequence with a different number of bits. The converter contains a rank allocation unit (201), that analyses values of the first code generated in a reference state and allocates a rank representing different parts of the first bit sequence depending on the value of the reference state, and an extraction unit connected to the rank generator and that extracts part of the first bit sequence specified by one of the ranks to produce the second code. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a method of converting a digital code. (b) a keyboard instrument for generating parts musical data information representing a musical piece.
