Production of an X-ray image of an object which has small differences in density, comprises using an X-ray source (1) whose rays are monochromated using monochromating crystals, and collimated, and an X-ray detector, especially for X-ray mammography. The crystals have a Rocking width in the divergence region, and the object is irradiated with X-rays matched to its width. The X-ray source , monochromating crystals (2) and collimator (3) are rotated about an axis that passes through the collimator gap.
