The arrangement has a torque estimator (100A) for estimating the torque of a torque converter using a characteristic of the torque converter and controls the gearbox using the estimated torque. The estimator corrects a torque converter pump wheel characteristic and/or torque ratio characteristic using the gearbox oil temp. and at least one other parameter, e.g. the drive shaft torque (Te) and speed (Ne). An Independent claim is also included for a method of controlling automatic gearboxes.
