A liquid crystal medium based on polar compounds with positive dielectric anisotropy contains (A) bicyclohexyl derivatives with an alkenyl group at position 4 and an alkenyl or p-alkenylphenyl group at position 4' and (B) optionally fluorinated phenyl benzoate derivatives with a substituted cyclohexyl group at position 4 and a trifluoromethoxy group at 4'. A liquid crystal (LC) medium based on a mixture of polar compounds with positive dielectric anisotropy, contains alkenyl compound(s) of formula (I) and compound(s) of formula (IA). R = optionally fluorinated 1-12C alkyl, alkoxy, alkenyl or alkenyloxy (optionally with one or more CH2 replaced by -O-, -COO- or -CO- with no direct bonds between oxygen atoms); R1 = 2-7C alkenyl; R2 = as for R1, or -Q-Y if m = 1; Q = CF2, OCF2, CFH, OCFH or a single bond; Y = F or Cl; m = 0 or 1; L1-L4 = H or F. An Independent claim is also included for electro-optical displays containing an LC medium as described.
