Electrode structure production, by exposing a film of proton conductive material and carbon particles to a metal atom flux to form distributed metal polycrystals, is new. An electrode structure is produced by applying a mixture of a proton conductive material and carbon particles onto a current collector plate and producing a stream of metal atoms which are collected on the surface of the applied film to form distributed metal polycrystals. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) production of a combined electrolyte/electrode structure for an electrochemical cell having a solid polymeric proton conductive electrolyte membrane, comprising the above process; (ii) a combined electrolyte/electrode structure produced as in (i); and (iii) an electrode structure produced by the above process.
