The truing device includes a shape memory part for storing a previously set sleeve contour of the grinding device. A truing part (5) has a rotary driven truing element (17) for bearing against the sleeve face of the grinding stone (9) and for aligning the stone according to the memorised shape. Position detecting means (27) detect the contact position of the truing element against the grinding stone whilst a regulating part (7) calculates the diameter of the stone from the sleeve contour and controls and regulates the speed of the truing element herefrom so that the ratio of the circumferential speeds of the grinding stone to the truing element can be kept to a predeterminable value.
