A skimmer assembly removes floating light substances such as sludge, foam or solids from a fluid surface (430) in a basin forming e.g. part of a water treatment process. A skimmer (5) assembly (1) removes floating light substances such as sludge, foam or solids from a fluid surface (430) in a basin forming e.g. part of a water treatment process. The skimmer (5) moves (M) relative to the floating substances and has a skim-depth adjustment mechanism. The skimmer (5) is followed at a fixed but adjustable interval especially by a collector consisting of a submerged shield (56). During the skimming motion (M) the skimmer (5) maintains a fixed height above the fluid surface (430). The shield forms part of the trap for the floating residues.
