The engine is a direct injection spark ignition engine using an ultra lean combustion or a pre-mixed combustion. The system includes a device for determining the required fuel injection end timing at which the injection of a certain quantity of fuel should end. A margin detector determines the difference between the required fuel injection end timing and a given injection timing. An ignition timing correction device corrects the ignition timing if the difference is less than a predetermined value. The latter value may be based on the detected engine speed and load. The devices are implemented by an ECU (80).
