A fulgimide compound which reversibly changes from a colorless state into a colored state upon the action of light including ultraviolet-rays, and a photochromic composition containing the compound. The fulgimide compound is of formula (I), CHEM wherein the CHEM represents a divalent aromatic hydrocarbon or unsaturated heterocyclic group, R1 represents a monovalent hydrocarbon or heterocyclic group and CHEM represents a norbornylidene group, bicycloÄ3,3,1Ünonylidene group or adamantylidene group and R2 is perhalogenoalkyl, cyano, alkoxycarbonyl, alkylcarbonyl, arylcarbonyl, nitro ulfonyl, alkylsulfonyl, arylsulfonyl or aryloxycarbonyl.
