The cold cathode construction has a cathode (13), electrode grid (15a) and anode (32), and is immersed in hydrogen. Transmitted electrons are focussed by the grid and pass to the electrode. In initial transmission, each pair of transmitter electrons irradiates the next pair to clean them using a positive voltage above that of the grid.
