The system enables detection of attempted theft and location of vehicle. The system uses beacons (1) which are attached to objects which are to be protected, the beacons each including a transmitter (E1) broadcasting information held in a memory. A terminal (2) is mounted within the vehicle and includes a receiver circuit (RE2) detecting the messages transmitted by the beacons. A global positioning system is provided to determine the position of the vehicle in the event on an alarm signal being produced. In the event of an alarm condition arising, the system transmits a composed message to a fixed remove surveillance station (PC).
