Engines with very small bypass ratio (21) are dimensioned for transonic ascent and optimized for supersonic cruise. These engines are operated at a lower power setting so as to limit noise and are also used for take off. Several engines with large bypass ratio (11) are used alone for subsonic cruise and approach. They are used with the small bypass ratio engines at take off and retracted inside the aircraft at supersonic cruise.
