Producing color image differentiating elements, comprising counting particles passing through examined zones, and determining their spectrums, is new. The signals are integrated to obtain pairs of results, the ratio of which represents the atomic number of the principal element present. From these signals an image is produced, in which the material's thickness or density is indicated by a code. An Independent claim is also included for apparatus for carrying out the novel method.
