The liner for the cylinder of an internal combustion engine has a stop shoulder (6) formed radially on its outer surface to engage stop abutments formed in the cylinder block bores. The shoulder has a contact face (8) to engage the abutments and hold the liner in position under an axial preload. The rigidity of the contact face and-or the support face (16) of the abutment can be of reduced rigidity to conform under load.
