The mobile telephone authentication network operates between a mobile telephone (MS) and a fixed network (HLR,AVC). Two keys (Kj) are applied (E2,E5) and memorised and random numbers (NA) are generated. A second algorithm is memorised in the second fixed location and compared with the first mobile location. A signature (SG) is generated and transmitted with the random number, and passed back to the mobile unit and compared (E6). The first key and random number are not applied to the first algorithm whilst the transmitted signal and comparison outcome are identical.
