A hydrogen separation and dissociation membrane, made of an amorphous nickel alloy containing zirconium and/or hafnium is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) a hydrogen separation and dissociation membrane made of an amorphous multi-component alloy containing nickel and zirconium and/or hafnium as main components; (ii) preparation of a hydrogen separation and dissociation membrane material by melting a mixture of Ni with Zr and/or Hf in an inert gas; and (iii) a process for activating a hydrogen separation and dissociation membrane by exposure to an active gas at not greater than its crystallization temperature.
