A ruler (10) and sliding head (3) have caliper feelers (11,12) for application to bark. The sliding head (3) has a cord (4) which traverses pulleys (25,26) and is hooked (27) to the ruler end (29). A sensor measures the pulley rotation and hence sliding head displacement. The hook (27) may be detached and used to measure average bark length and a microprocessor in the head automatically measures volume from validated data.
