Hydrogenation of organic compounds with at least one functional group from aldehyde, acetone, esters, acids and nitro and/or having an aromatic group involves using a catalyst comprising a support, at least one group VIII metal and at least one further element M from germanium, niobium, tin, lead, rhenium, gallium, indium, gold, silver and thallium. M is introduced in an aqueous solvent at pH below 10 as an organometallic compound containing at least one M-carbon bond.
