Disclosed is an aligning film having good liquid crystal orientation, which can be obtained by irradiating polyimide comprising N- (2-(3,5- diaminobenzoyl)oxyethyl)-&agr;-phenylmaleimide and 1,2,3,4- cyclobutanetetracarboxylic dihydride with polarized UV-rays without employing such methods as rubbing treatment and oblique deposition.
